Welcome to The Crafty Wren — a little corner of the internet built for anyone who owns a hook, a growing yarn stash, and a soft spot for making things by hand. Whether you found us searching for a beginner-friendly blanket pattern or you fell down a Pinterest rabbit hole of amigurumi octopuses, I'm genuinely glad you're here.

I'm Wren Halloway, and this site is my cozy, slightly yarn-covered home base. Here's the story of how it came to be, what we believe in, and what you can expect every time you visit.

How The Crafty Wren Began

My love of yarn started on my grandmother's front porch when I was seven. Nana Ruth handed me a hook, taught me a chain stitch, and quietly set the course for the rest of my life. I didn't know it then, but that porch afternoon was the real beginning of this site.

For eight years, I worked as a graphic designer at a stationery company — great with color palettes and layouts, but somewhere along the way I stopped making things just for the joy of it. When I was laid off in 2019, I picked my hooks back up to cope with the stress, and I rediscovered the happiest, most grounded version of myself. What started as a way to decompress became a blog, and by 2021, it became my full-time work. These days I design original crochet and amigurumi patterns — over 150 and counting — test every tutorial multiple times, and write it all from my cottage-style home near Asheville, North Carolina, alongside my husband Tom and Mochi, a rescue cat who is firmly convinced that all yarn belongs to her.

What I Believe About Crafting

• Wonky first attempts are a rite of passage, not a failure. My first amigurumi looked like a haunted potato, and it still sits on my desk as proof that everyone starts somewhere.
• Frogging isn't failure — undoing your work and starting again is simply part of the craft, in yarn and in life.
• Everyone is welcome here: every skill level, every budget, every age. There's no gatekeeping on this porch.

Life Off the Hook

When I'm not testing patterns, I'm usually losing a quiet war against the squirrels in my vegetable garden, thrifting old craft books, hiking the Blue Ridge Mountains with Tom, or baking sourdough with wildly inconsistent results. Every December, I crochet blanket squares for a local NICU charity, and it's genuinely my favorite project of the year.
