Hi, I'm Wren Halloway, and The Crafty Wren is my little corner of the internet — but it's also a real publication with real standards. Every stitch pattern, every roundup, every troubleshooting guide that goes up on this site has been thought through, tested, and written with a specific promise in mind: if I publish it, I've actually made it, and I believe it will work for you. My Mission for This Site

I started this blog in 2019 with a hook in one hand and a lot of uncertainty in the other. What's kept me going is a simple mission: make crochet and amigurumi feel approachable, joyful, and completely free of gatekeeping. Whether you're chaining your first stitch or you're on your fiftieth amigurumi, my job is to give you patterns and techniques that are clear, tested, and genuinely useful — not content written just to fill a page. How Content Is Created and Reviewed

Every tutorial and pattern published here goes through the same process before it ever reaches you:

• I design or select the pattern based on what I'd actually want to make in my own cottage-style workspace.
• I crochet it myself — usually more than once — timing gauge, checking stitch counts, and noting anywhere a beginner might get stuck.
• I photograph each step as I go, so the images match the written instructions exactly (no stock photos standing in for real work).
• I re-read and edit the written pattern against my working notes to catch typos, miscounted rows, or unclear wording before publishing.

When a technique falls outside my personal experience — say, a specialized fiber-dyeing process or a piece of equipment I don't own — I say so plainly in the post, and I lean on trusted craft resources and experienced makers in the community rather than guessing. I'd rather tell you honestly what I don't know than dress up a guess as expertise.

How I Choose Topics

Every post fits somewhere in the categories you see across the site — Amigurumi, Crochet Techniques, Crochet for Home, Wearables, Yarn & Supplies, Seasonal projects, and the Beginner's Corner. I choose topics based on three things: what readers actually ask me for (hello, inbox full of "can you make this in a smaller size" requests), what feels genuinely useful for the season or skill level, and what I'm personally excited to spend hours hooking. If I wouldn't make it in my own living room with Mochi trying to sit on the yarn, I probably won't publish it.

Sourcing, Trends, and Staying Current

Crochet trends move fast — a stitch goes viral on Pinterest and suddenly everyone wants the pattern. I keep an eye on what's trending (you can find my boards on Pinterest), but I never publish a tutorial just to chase a trend. If I feature something inspired by another maker's idea or a technique I learned from a specific source, I credit it. Historical and technique information is cross-checked against reputable craft references, not copied from a single random blog post.

How I Recommend Products

I get asked about yarn weight, hook brands, and stuffing all the time, and my answers are based on what I've actually used in my own projects — including plenty of budget and thrifted materials, because I firmly believe you don't need expensive supplies to make something beautiful. When I do recommend a specific yarn, hook, or tool, it's because it performed well in my own hands, not because a brand asked me to say so.
